Updating Netgear GS724Tv4 config for Tesira AVnu certification

This article describes how to update the Netgear GS724Tv4 switch configuration file to ensure proper AVB functionality with Tesira 2.4.2 (and higher) firmware releases. Firmware version 2.4.2 and higher include some modifications to Biamp's AVB firmware that were required to attain certification with the AVnu Alliance. These firmware modifications necessitate changes to the Netgear switch configuration. The Netgear switch configuration must be updated prior to upgrading to Tesira firmware versions 2.4.2 and higher.

This article is for users with Netgear GS724Tv4 switches in an existing system which is being updated. Netgear switches shipped from Biamp after February 8, 2016 should have the correct configuration file already installed.

The Netgear GS724Tv4 firmware should not be updated, it should remain at 6.3.1.4. This update process only modifies the switch's configuration settings.

Load Biamp configuration file

When Netgear switches are reset they will revert to a default IP of 192.168.0.239. If multiple linked switches are reset at the same time this may cause problems due to IP conflicts between the switches. It is recommended that switches are updated one-by-one while not connected to others.

When updating a single, standalone Netgear GS724Tv4 switch use the following steps.

Download the new cfg file for the Netgear GS724Tv4 switch. Click here for the file.

Reset the Netgear switch to factory default.

  • The reset can be done by the front panel "Factory Defaults" pinhole reset button, via the web interface of the switch (Maintenance→Reset→Factory Default), or using Netgear's SmartControlCenter software. This will change the IP address of the switch to the default of 192.168.0.239 (or DHCP, if available). All of the port indicator LEDs will illuminate during the boot process.

Install the new configuration file via the Netgear web browser software interface.:

  • Using your web browser, navigate to the IP address of the switch (192.168.0.239 or a DHCP address).
  • Log in with the password. The default is “password”.
  • Click on the Maintenance tab.
  • Click on Download.
  • Click on HTTP File Download.
  • Change File Type to Text Configuration – this can take several seconds to happen.
  • Click on the Browse… button.
  • Locate the configuration file that you previously downloaded to your computer and select it.
  • Click on the APPLY button at the bottom right corner of the browser window.
  • After a few seconds, the web page will refresh indicating the file has transferred and the switch will begin to apply the configuration file, which can take up to 90 seconds. All of the port indicator LEDs will illuminate during the boot process, then turn off for all inactive ports. At this point, close the web browser, wait 30 seconds, and then launch the web browser again and verify it loads. The static IP address of the Netgear switch will now be 192.168.0.239.

Power cycle the Netgear switch. Some of the changes will not take place until a reboot has occurred.

Manually enable AVB protocols for AVnu compliance

The steps below replicate the Biamp config file settings. We recommend starting with a full factory reset of the switch to ensure all desired settings apply properly. If your application has other port management requirements you will need to re-apply those settings to the relevant ports of your switch.

Reset the Netgear switch to factory default. If you have other custom settings applied you may wish to skip this step, however, we have seen cases of settings unexpectedly persisting. If there are AVB issues you may need to reset.

  • The reset can be done by the front panel "Factory Defaults" pinhole reset button, or via the web interface of the switch (Maintenance→Reset→Factory Default), or using Netgear's Smart Control Center Manager software. This will change the IP address of the switch to the default of 192.168.0.239 (or DHCP, if available). All of the port indicator LEDs will illuminate during the boot process.
Modify the settings.
  1. Click on the Switching tab, then click on the Auto-VoIP sub-page. In the "Protocol Based Port Settings" table, click the checkbox in the top-left corner to select all ports and enable Auto VoIP Mode for all ports. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.
  2. Click on the 802.1AS sub-page. Set the 802.1AS Status to Enable. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner. There will be an EAV advisory note which pops up after you hit Apply.
  3. While still on the 802.1AS sub-page click on the Advanced > 802.1AS Port Settings. In the purple header row at the top of the list select the check box to select all ports. Uncheck ports g25 and g26 (they should remain at their default values.) Enter a value of 5000 for the Pdelay Threshold. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.
  4. Click on the MRP sub-page. Set the MVRP Mode, MSRP Mode, and Periodic State Machine (MVRP Mode) to Enable. Ensure that all other options are disabled. Also, set MSRP Max Fan In Ports to 26. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner. There will be an EAV advisory note which pops up after you hit Apply.
  5. While still on the MRP sub-page click on the Advanced > MRP Port Settings. In the purple header row at the top of the list click the checkbox to select all ports and then select Enable for MVRP Mode and MSRP Mode and enter values of 20 for the Join Time, 120 for the Leave Timer, and 2500 for the Leave All Timer. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.
  6. Click on the VLAN sub-page. Under the Advanced settings choose Voice VLAN Configuration. Enable the Voice VLAN Global Admin Mode at the top of the page. Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.
  7. While still on the VLAN sub-page, under the Advanced settings choose VLAN Membership. In the  VLAN ID dropdown choose VLAN ID 2, in the Group Operation dropdown choose "Tag All". Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.
  8. Click on the LAG sub-page. In the purple header row at the top of the LAG Configuration list select the check box to select all ports and select Disable for Admin Mode, STP Mode, and Link Trap.  Then, click Apply in the bottom-right corner.

Power cycle the switch. Some changes will not be applied properly without the power cycle.

After following the above steps, the switch should be ready to pass AVB traffic.
